Clever ways to optimize your website for RankBrain

RankBrain used a set of databases based on people, places, and objects (also called entities) to define the algorithm and its automatic learning processes.

These words (queries) are then decomposed into word vectors using a mathematical formula to give these words an “address”. Similar words have similar “directions”.

When Google processes an unknown query, those math relationships are used to better match the query and return multiple related results.

Over time, Google refines results based on user interaction and machine learning to improve the match between users’ search intent and search results returned by Google.

It is important to note that the words the search engines used to throw the words “and” or “they” were not included in the RankBrain analysis. RankBrain is also designed to help understand queries to get the best results, especially for queries with negative targeting. For example, queries that use words like “no” or “no”.

But if you’re still writing good content, you’re probably wondering what else you can do. What can this “advantage” bring you? How can you optimize this “classification signal”?

This answer to this question is not an answer, but another question:

Why would you try it?

RankBrain can be beneficial for some unique use cases. For most sites, however, the time and energy spent on classifying an unknown Google query (that is, nobody uses it) would be much better used for other tasks.

In fact, not only is it trying to optimize a query that few users are using, it is constantly changing.

RankBrain results should change and provide better results. Therefore, optimization is an attempt to constantly hit a moving target.

The best advice? Follow the advice of Illyes.

You must write good content.

You must make sure it sounds natural.

this is how you can optimize for RankBrain Algorithm

If you want to obtain a good rank in Google searches, you need to optimize your website and content for RankBrain. In the absence of these techniques, your website might quickly lose relevance and you’ll notice a drop in your click-throughs.

How big of a difference are we talking about?

If a website’s click-through rate decreases, the amount of user data for the website decreases. When that happens, RankBrain has fewer data points to judge its relevance.

That means that your website won’t show up in the top results. Over a period of time, your visibility will be greatly reduced.

How quickly can this happen? Quicker than you think. As Google’s confidence in RankBrain increases, you’ll soon see that your old SEO tactics are no longer bearing fruit.

So, how can you optimize your website and content for RankBrain? Here are a few surefire ways of getting RankBrain to work in your favor.

1. Build Your Website’s Reputation

Spend some time to understand what your audience likes to read. What type of content do they spend more time on?

For example, if your target audience is new moms, they’re most likely to be interested in topics related to infants or toddlers. Understand what your audience likes, and create more content around such topics.

However, creating content isn’t enough. To build your website’s reputation, you need to work on obtaining quality backlinks. You can guest post on high-authority websites that have a similar target audience. This can give you more traffic as well as greater visibility.

Try to create content that’s engaging. Feel free to embed videos, images, gifs, or any other media content. This can help you increase engagement which helps to build your reputation.

The more time a user spends on your website, the more relevant it appears to RankBrain. You should also share your content on social media to get greater engagement.

2. Optimize for Medium Tail Keywords

The way RankBrain works, long-tail keywords are likely to be history soon. Earlier Google used to fetch results based on exact keywords used. So, you would get different results for “best speakers for computer” and “best computer speakers.”

However, RankBrain understands that both these search queries mean the exact same thing. So it gives the same search results.

The best way to optimize for RankBrain is to optimize for medium-tail keywords. Optimizing for medium-tail keywords provides for automatic optimization for long-tail keywords in RankBrain.

This also requires you to create more quality content. This makes it easier to optimize it for medium-tail keywords.

3. Create Content that Addresses User Intent

RankBrain puts the focus back on content. If you have good content, you can easily optimize your website.

If your content is not good, your click-through rate (CTR) will drop. Readers will not come back to your website and it will lead to a lower ranking in RankBrain.

It might seem like RankBrain is making it tougher for websites to get better rankings. But there’s a silver lining to it.

You don’t need to focus too much on finding relevant keywords. If you’re writing an article about desserts, RankBrain will pick up “desserts” and its related terms as keywords. So, words like “sweets” and “sweet dish” will also be considered as keywords.

With RankBrain, your article might rank for queries related to desserts as well as sweet dishes. So keyword density shouldn’t be your focus anymore.

You should focus more on addressing user intent through your content. This is because quality content is all that matters for readers. Quality content focused on user intent will bring in higher CTR.

Since RankBrain improves the quality of search results, it also collects information about user satisfaction.

For example, someone clicks on the #1 result for a query but doesn’t find it useful. Then they click on the next result in the SERPs. And they continue to do so until they find what they are looking for. When they do find what they want, they stay on that page longer. And that is an indication of satisfaction.

As a result, those results towards the top may notice a drop in their rankings. Also, the one that was able to satisfy the user’s intent, gets a boost in rankings.

So it’s important to make your content informative, engaging, and useful. Try to pick topics that your target audience might be interested in and write longer, useful content that answers all possible questions about that topic.

4. Increase Your Click-Through Rates

Google’s quality score algorithm rates your website based on your keywords and quality of content. The click-through rate is an important part of the quality score algorithm.

It gives an idea of the overall user experience of the website. The higher the CTR, the better it is for your website.

As RankBrain learns from human decisions, you need to ensure that users click on your links. A higher click-through rate is critical for the success of your RankBrain SEO strategy.

A great way of getting a higher CTR is to ensure that your content is well-written. You also need to optimize your landing pages to increase your CTR.

Wikipedia has a high CTR, authority, and a great reputation. And so, it ranks higher in Google search results. Wikipedia outranks a really large number of websites. This happens because the website’s content is relevant, engaging, and people come back to it.

What can you do when Google Fred Penalty hits your website

As we’ve seen, Google won’t tell you exactly what’s in the Fred algorithm. That’s why some SEO professionals had to make some inferences.

However, Gary Illyes did offer an important piece of advice about how to avoid getting hit with a Fred penalty.

This past April, at the AMA session during the SMX West conference, Illyes said that the answer to Fred is in the webmaster quality guidelines.

So here’s what you can do to stay in the good graces of Google:

  • Provide high-quality content – In your content marketing efforts, make sure that your articles are top-notch. If you have to, hire a professional writer to give you the best quality. Also, strive for longform content as that tends to cover subjects more exhaustively.

The Ultimate Guide to 10x Content - Avg Content Length- Google Fred Penalty

  • Avoid “forced” backlinks – If you’re in the habit of buying backlinks from people who own their own private blog networks (PBNs), stop that practice immediately. Even “honest” guest-posting can get you into trouble if you’re forcing unnatural backlinks from low-quality sites. Instead, strive to produce quality content (see above) and let Google’s algorithm push it to the top of the SERPs.
  • Avoid excessive ads – The Fred update also hit sites with an abundance of ads. Although it’s unclear how many ads is “too many” for Fred, you can use common sense. If you think people will find your site annoying because it has a couple of pop-ups, a video ad in the corner, ads in the middle of the content, and banner ads all over the page, you can be fairly certain that you have “too many” ads.

Avoid creating pages with too many ads or you will be penalized by Fred - Google Fred Penalty

If some of your content lost rank because of Fred, you might not be able to fully recover it. However, going forward, you can make sure that your future content ranks well. Do that by producing quality articles, avoiding backlink spam, and showing only a few ads on your site.

In addition, make sure your website is focused and does not try to cover general topics.

How to protect website from Google Fred Algorithm

Did you notice a substantial drop in organic traffic on your site? If so, what can you do to recover from Fred, and how do you protect yourself from future content, back-link, and advertising display algorithm updates? Following are five solutions that will have positive impacts on your website’s SEO.

Create More Engaging Content:

When creating new content, make sure it’s relevant and of the highest quality. Don’t skimp on resources for quality; hire only the best content producers, especially those completing the copy-writing.

The writing should be written for humans, not search engines. Google’s algorithms get smarter and smarter everyday, and the latest Fred update is just a continuation of Google’s path to having nothing but valuable content across the web, which includes good writing flow, spelling, and grammar.

Above all, content should be free of grammatical errors, fact checked, and also educate and entertain your readers. Remembering to chunk content into smaller sections with sub-titles (H tags for you SEOs), and stray far from “black hat” SEO techniques like keyword stuffing, as has been the norm for many years now, but we will continue to issue warnings here until we see compliance. Resistance is futile.

There also used to be a case for shorter content due to modern attention spans while online, but based on studies like the Searchmetrics’ Ranking Factors & Rank Correlations (searchmetrics.com), Google rewards websites with longer-form content. The days of 300-word blog posts are gone for those who want success.

Update Outdated Content:

Most of the websites affected by the Fred update had outdated content that caused some concern for irrelevancy–something Google obviously frowns against.

Update your content, paying close attention to any content that’s not worth any value, such as products no longer available or events that have passed. Along the way optimize each piece of content with updated targeted keywords and call to actions. Make sure all of your lead forms are concurrent with the latest versions, and any outbound links are not directing clicks to dead webpages.

If you must delete content–like a page about a temporary sales page or past job postings–don’t simply hit the delete button or unpublish it. The best SEO practice is to redirect it to another page through what SEOs call a 301 redirect. Point old product pages to the newest product, or old job postings to your careers page.

Check those Back-links:

Back-links are simply other websites that have linked to a page or post on your website for a reference. The problem is some of those websites linking back to you are of poor quality, or even worse, unknowingly display porn or other unwaned links deployed by malware or blackhat spammers. This is where it’s imperative to have an SEO perform some back-link analysis and resolve any bad back-links.  We suggest using webmaster tools (search console) first, but also use third party tools such as MOZ tools to identify and formally disavow bad links.

Less Intrusive Advertising and Affiliates:

From our studies, the Google Fred algorithm update had the largest impact on content-heavy websites. Many of these types of websites, such as a news blog or product review platform, create income through advertising and affiliate marketing.

The problem is some of these ads–you know, those annoying pop ups that are impossible to click off without losing the page you’re viewing–are too intrusive. The same goes for some affiliate ads such as the ones within the text you are reading.

The Fred algorithm penalized those sites with the most intrusive ads, which take away from user experience. Again, user experience is the main focus for Google, and always will be.

Smart tips to recover website from Fred Algorithm update

As Google has not released any official statement regarding this update and given a hint to the types of links this update will be targeting, there are certain steps you can follow if the rankings have been hit from the update.

  • It is imperative you have built a natural anchor text cloud including – business and generic keywords, naked URLs, and brand name.
  • You must have seen a number of sites ranking with site wide-do follow links, but make sure you are cautious of such link profile. It has a risk of going down anytime.
  • Make sure that the backlink is related to the context.
  • Avoid using automated tools or bots in order to create backlinks for example – mass blog commenting bots
  • Always remember that the quality of the links has more relevance than the total number of the links.
  • If a link can be claimed easily by everyone, then the chances are high that it has less value.
  • Make sure you have avoided paid links, link pyramids, and link exchange.
  • You can use affiliate links but make sure they should not be the sole motive of the page. Make sure affiliate links are only added when they are according to your content and avoid overdoing them.
  • The focus should be on the users instead of stuffing keywords strategies.
  • Inclusion of various other content forms such as gifs and videos should be encouraged.
  • Just because you have a chance to claim a particular link, it does mean that you have to go for it. Almost every website is after such links and moreover the search engines don’t value these links. Instead, you should go for the high-quality links.

Here are some important bullets to consider:

  • Perform a crawl analysis of your site and audit heavily through the lens of Google’s core ranking updates focused on quality.
  • Identify major problems (including UX, content, and aggressive advertising), and fix them as quickly as you can. But don’t rush the changes… make sure they are implemented flawlessly. Don’t inject more problems onto your site.
  • Read the Quality Rater Guidelines (QRG) thoroughly – and then read it again. Like I’ve said many times, it’s packed with amazing information directly from Google detailing what should be rated low and high quality. I’ve seen a serious connection between what I’m seeing in the field and what’s contained in the QRG.
  • Don’t put band-aids on the situation. Fix as many of the problems as you can. Band-aids will keep you in the gray area of Google’s quality algorithms and you might not see much upward movement during subsequent updates.
  • Work hard on publishing killer content over the long-term, building links naturally, building your brand, and improving user engagement. Again, Google needs to see significant improvement over the long term, not just over a few weeks.
  • Periodically audit your site through the lens of “quality”. Don’t make changes and never revisit the situation. That’s how problems creep in. And when enough problems creep in, sites can get hammered. Don’t let that happen.
  • You’ll need to wait for the next major core ranking update focused on quality in order to see movement. There’s not a set timeframe for those updates to roll out, although the past few have been almost exactly one month apart (1/6, 2/7, 3/7, and then 4/4). Google needs to refresh its quality algorithms, and when it does, you have a chance of recovering (or at least starting to recover). Keep your head down, work hard, and keep enhancing quality. If you do, you absolutely can recover. Don’t give up.

Tips for link building to speed up keyword ranking

It’s like high school all over again – with popularity the name of the game.  In the world of search engine optimisation (SEO) you need others to confirm that your website (and therefore your business) is a great destination.

On the web, this means links.  Links from another site to yours. Also known as backlinks.

So – how do you get backlinks from these types of site to improve your ranking?

Linked to sites that gets involved

This can take true commitment and the links back to you will take time, but getting involved in your local community is a great way to get to know the people in that community, network and support other organisations.

The outcome you want is a mention (and with it, a link) on their website, and in any material published elsewhere, of course. Make sure you ask them to give you a link from the relevant content on their website as not all of these groups will think to do it as a matter of course.

  • Host a local event – seminars, charitable or community events and get your co-sponsors or supporters to promote it (with a link to the information about the event on your site).
  • Sponsor local schools, sports team or not for profit such as an animal rescue organisation. Make sure there is a link back to your site from theirs and in any promo material.
  • Start a discount/product partnership with a local organisation.
  • Contact local media and offer your expertise as a source for their work.
  • Offer to speak at a local educational institute (such as a night class).

In all cases, the idea is for your business name and a link to your website to be on any/all material published on-line about the event. It doesn’t have to be flashy, just a simple text link will suffice (see the bit about anchor text below).

If you are already involved in your local community, it will be a case of asking people for these links to be included – easy!

Create useful resources

This means having something on your website that is useful to people such as:

1. A map, guide or list of local:

  • Tourist sites of interest.
  • Retail/shopping areas with free WiFi spots.
  • Events and activity based attractions.
  • Business meeting rooms and locations.
  • Key buildings or destinations.
  • Cultural attractions.

2. A guide through local by-laws or how to get something done using local businesses and organisations with contact details and web links in a step-by-step instruction

3. Video how-to’s and tutorials for standard tasks that everyone needs to be able to do from DIY home improvement to changing the printer ink cartridges.  You can refer to local suppliers within the video if you want to make it more relevant and useful to people within a specific area.

If possible, when creating this content, think of something related to your business because then you can include some of your expertise into the mix e.g.:

  • GST calculator (bookkeepers).
  • Tax return and payment due date tables (accountants).
  • Phone system cost calculators (telecommunication companies).
  • Building cost estimators (builders or quantity surveyors).
  • How to change a tap washer video (plumbers).
  • Styling tips (personal stylist).

The idea with these types of resources is that other people who find them useful will link to them, rather than create their own.

For example, we’re looking at one of our most popular blog posts How much will that website cost? to see if it can be turned into an on-line calculator so people can estimate the cost of a build based on their individual needs.

Leverage the relationships you already have

If you’ve spent time building a mutually positive relationship with a client or supplier then it is easier to ask them to help build both your businesses, than it is to ask a relative stranger.

Provide glowing (but honest) testimonials for any local business you interact with in return for a link on the testimonial when they publish it on their website. And who doesn’t want more testimonials on their site?

This can include whoever you have used:

  • For your office fit-out or furniture.
  • Set up your computer systems or provided a laptop.
  • Cleaning your offices.
  • Your signage, printing or other design work.
  • Catered lunch or an event or even delivers your coffee!
  • Organised your insurance.
  • Took care of your plumbing, electrical, painting or other property related services.
  • Did copy writing work for you.
  • Printed your logo on pens, t-shirts and corporate gifts.

Or, you could offer something to help their content efforts, such as guest posts for their blog (if they have one).

And be sure to ask to be listed on any preferred vendors or partner pages.

Great ways to bring more visitors to your website

It takes work, sometimes quite hard word, to get more people to visit your website. But to make it easier – we’re giving you a dozen ways to do it.

1. Create great content

People want information. That means content.

Not just good sales copy about what your company offers, but content that helps them out in some way.

People love content so much they will actively hunt it down.

You want them to find you when they do this.

And to attract them, your site needs a blog, tips, FAQs or resource section – or even better, all of the above!

You have to publish things that people want to read about, which isn’t normally the same as the stuff the organisational hierarchy have a strong opinion about, so:

  • Ask reception or customer service staff
  • Look at sites like Quora.com for questions frequently asked
  • Think about what you’re asked all the time by friends, family and associates
  • A radical thought – ask your customers directly.

Then create content that answers those questions.

Organic Search Traffic

Organic traffic is that which comes from people clicking on the (non-paid) search result links.

Most effective, websites with healthy visitor numbers, have a good proportion of visits coming from organic search.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is everything you do to make your site a more attractive destination in the search engines eyes – i.e to get you good search result rankings. Some of the strategies above are necessary to improve your search rankings and grow organic traffic.

But in addition, your site should be optimised for search – which means getting all the technical bits right so the site is an attractive destination for the search engines. This includes:

  • Unique landing page for each product or service offering
  • Search friendly URLs
  • Canonical URLs
  • Unique title tags and descriptions
  • Appropriate use of keywords in the above, but also in headings and content body
  • Clean, fast loading code

Get out and be social

People do business with people, so make sure you are where your customers hang out – whether it be Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter or Pinterest.

Being active on social networks means being the face of the business so get someone who is an appropriate spokesperson – not just the youngest, hippest person on the team!

Like the website itself, you will need to promote your Facebook page or Pinterest page, and reach out to build your Twitter/LinkedIn communities. This can be done via competitions and giveaways, or actively reaching out to individuals. It depends on the platform.

Once you’ve written your excellent content, share it on these social media platforms so that it is exposed to more people. Include social sharing buttons on your website so it is easier for readers to share it for you.

Interact and join discussions – if you comment intelligently on content or discussions that are directly related to your business, and if you back it up with helpful content on your website – then this can be very effective.

However, it can be time consuming, and too many people comment on blogs and forums just for the sake of it so pick your platforms and discussions carefully. If your content answers a question you can also link to it in your response to questions or discussions..

Become a video star

A blog post or article that answers a common question can be re purposed as video or Slideshare content. And for complex services, a picture paints a thousand words.

Have a product? Are you a location based business? A video is a great way to show them off.

Set up a You Tube or Vimeo channel to post your video, and include prompts to visit the site or subscribe to your channel for further updates. Video content also contributes to search visibility.

Good video can take a while to prepare and you need the right tools to do it. Alternatively there are video creation companies that will do it for you.

Attract referrals from other sites

Referred visitors are a bit the same as referrals in the offline world. They vary in quality but can be a very effective way of attracting visitors to your site and getting leads.

Referrals are when another site places a link from their site to yours – when someone clicks on that link they will show up in Google Analytics as a referred visit.

Get repeat visitors

Don’t forget that it can be cheaper to get more business from your existing client base than it is to win someone who has not dealt with you before.

Make sure you have some of your website dedicated to providing good support and service to your existing customers.

Include regular updates and fresh content on your site so people come back for more – even if they weren’t ready to buy what you offer the first time they visit, over time they will become familiar with your content and your business. And knowing is the first step in the know-like-trust process.

Email newsletters with links to your latest blog or article is a great way to a) get material for your newsletter and b) send people to your website where they can spend time reading about your offers that might be relevant to them.
